DESIGNING OF STILLWATER

QUIET STRUCTURE. COMPOSED STRENGTH.

A Reflection on Composure and Clarity.

There is a kind of confidence that doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t rush, and it doesn’t require embellishment. Stillwater was designed for that state — calm, assured, and intentional. Within the Tidal Grace Swimwear Collection, Stillwater represents a moment of pause. Where other designs explore motion and transition, this piece settles into form. It is defined by clarity rather than movement, allowing proportion, line, and restraint to carry the design forward.

Stillwater is not about stillness as absence — it is about knowing when nothing more is needed.

DESIGN INTENTION

The swim silhouette was developed to feel resolved in a single glance. Clean lines, subtle shaping, and controlled proportions define the piece without the need for embellishment. The design relies on placement — where seams fall, where the eye settles — rather than overt detail.

When adapted into its dress form, the same principles apply. The silhouette remains deliberate and self-contained, designed to read as complete without relying on movement or volume to create interest.

Stillwater does not shift or transform — it holds.

FROM SWIM TO RESORT

Rather than transitioning through fluidity, Stillwater transitions through context.

This design moves:

  • from water to seating,
  • from poolside to table,
  • from leisure into composed wear,

without altering its identity. It does not become something else — it simply enters a different setting. As swim, it is controlled and polished. As resort wear, it reads as purposeful and grounded, suited to environments where simplicity carries authority.

THE COLOR STORY

The color palette for Stillwater was selected to reinforce form rather than soften it. Muted, grounded tones were chosen to keep attention on proportion and silhouette, allowing the structure of the design to remain uninterrupted.

These colors do not ask for attention — they allow the design to stand on its own.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Stillwater was developed during my studies at the Fashion Institute of Florida as part of a broader investigation into how restraint functions in design. By limiting movement, detail, and visual interruption, this piece became a study in control and balance.

Through pattern refinement and iteration, Stillwater emerged as a reminder that clarity is not minimalism — it is decision-making.
