CREATION OF CROSSCURRENT

STRENGTH IN BALANCE. CONTROLLED MOVEMENT.

An Interplay of Tension and Release.

There is a point in the water where opposing forces meet — where movement doesn’t cancel itself out, but instead creates strength. Crosscurrent was designed in that space. As the second look in the Tidal Grace Swim Collection, Crosscurrent introduces a more architectural expression of fluidity. It is confident, deliberate, and grounded in structure, while still allowing the body to move freely through it. Where Midnight Tide opens the collection with depth and softness, Crosscurrent brings clarity and control.

This design is about balance — between exposure and coverage, strength and ease, form and function.

At its core, Crosscurrent explores power held with restraint.

DESIGN INTENTION

The cut-out silhouette establishes visual tension, drawing the eye through the body with purpose rather than decoration. Intersecting straps at the back reinforce this idea of crossing forces, creating support through geometry while maintaining an open, breathable feel.

In its swim form, Crosscurrent is secure and sculptural — designed to move with the body rather than sit on top of it. When transitioned into its dress form, the structure remains, but the tone shifts. The ruffled straps soften the silhouette, introducing movement and femininity without losing the strength of the underlying lines. Every seam, intersection, and opening was placed intentionally — not to reveal, but to define.

FROM SWIM TO RESORT

Crosscurrent was created for women who dress with intention, even in moments of ease.

This is a piece that transitions seamlessly:

  • from structured swim to relaxed resort wear,
  • from active movement to composed stillness,
  • from beachside afternoons to casual evenings.

Worn as swim, it feels confident and grounded. Worn as a dress, it becomes expressive and architectural — a design that holds its shape while allowing the wearer to move through her day without interruption.

THE COLOR STORY

The palette for Crosscurrent draws from deeper coastal tones — layered blues, softened contrasts, and textured surfaces that mirror water in motion. Rather than relying on sharp color shifts, the design uses tonal variation to create depth.

These colors were chosen to enhance structure, not distract from it. They bring calm to the lines, allowing the form itself to remain the focus.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Crosscurrent was developed during my studies at the Fashion Institute of Florida, where an emphasis on construction and pattern-making shaped how I approach convertible design. This piece reflects an ongoing exploration of how structure can create freedom — how thoughtful construction allows garments to move effortlessly between function and form.

Each element of Crosscurrent was refined through illustration and pattern development, with the goal of creating swimwear that extends naturally into resort wear through intention, not add-ons.
