White canvas footwear with cleaning cloth and supplies showing thoughtful care and maintenance

CARING FOR WHITE FOOTWEAR

White footwear is effortlessly versatile—perfect for warm days and endlessly wearable. But keeping it clean can sometimes feel like a losing battle, especially when the goal is to help footwear last longer.

Footbeds darken, soles scuff, and details pick up dirt far quicker than we'd like. Over the years, I've received countless messages asking the same question: How do I clean white footwear without ruining it?

After trying more household remedies than I can count, I finally landed on a method that works without damaging materials or requiring anything extreme.

Start with Regular Light Cleaning

Before cleaning any footwear, identify what it's made from. Different materials require different approaches, and using the wrong method can do more harm than good.

A quick wipe-down helps prevent dirt and oils from building up, which means far less scrubbing later. The goal is maintenance, not constant restoration.

A Method that Worked Best

After plenty of trial and error (and some very well-worn pairs used as test subjects), I settled on a simple product: Bar Keepers Friend.

Used correctly and sparingly, it's effective at lifting grime from white soles and footbeds.

How I used it:

  • Mix a small amount of the powder with water to form a paste
  • Apply gently with a soft sponge
  • Focus on soles and footbeds (avoid delicate straps or embellishments)
  • Rinse or wipe clean with a damp cloth
  • Allow footwear to air dry completely

On heavily soiled pieces, it does require some effort—but the results speak for themselves. Over a few minutes, the white gradually returns without harsh chemicals or bleaching.

Embellished or Detailed Footwear

If your footwear includes beading, jewels, or delicate details:

  • Avoid aggressive scrubbing
  • Work carefully around details
  • Never soak the piece
  • Gentle, controlled cleaning is always better than force.

Habits to Extend the Life of Footwear

Cleaning works best when paired with good everyday habits:

  • Rotate pairs to allow drying time
  • Store materials correctly (especially suede and leather)
  • Avoid repeated exposure to moisture
  • Clean based on material, not appearance alone

Final Thoughts

White footwear isn't meant to be perfect—but with thoughtful care, it can stay fresh and wearable far longer than one season.

  • Clean lightly and often
  • Deep clean only when necessary
  • Always let footwear dry fully before storing
